Application Review ProcessOnce we receive your application, we will review it to see if you meet our adoption criteria.
If you have pets that are not properly vaccinated, we will decline your application. This includes cats that are kept indoors at all times. Current (or past dogs) must have a history of DHPP and Rabies vaccinations/boosters. If you have pets that are not spayed/neutered, we will decline your application. We do call veterinary clinics to verify past vetting. (Please let veterinary office know to expect our call.) Vet history must confirm annual check ups, annual heartworm testing, vaccinations, flea/tick/heartworm prevention, and spayed/neutered pets. If we are unable to confirm this level of care for current or past pets, we will decline your application. First time pet owners may be considered based on application, phone or in-person interview, adoption counselor recommendation, home safety visit, home rental agreement, etc. All applicants must be 23 years of age or older. We often receive several applications for the same dog. We do not base our decision on the order in which the applications were received. We review each application and make our decision based on what we feel is the best fit for each dog. We reserve the right to decline any application that is not in the dog's best interest. |
The adoption fee can be paid in cash, check or online. Click on button above to pay adoption fee online. Do not pay this fee until adoption date has been confirmed. If paying online, please consider paying the service fee to offset convenience costs on online payments. (Service fee for adoption is about $12)
Have a question about your application? Our goal is to respond to applications within 7-10 business days. If you have submitted an application and have not heard back within a reasonable time frame or if you need to reactivate an inactive application, please click below. An application inquiry IS NOT the application. If you have not applied, please click here to apply.

Adoption Process
All adoption decisions are based on what we feel is in the best interest for each dog. We reserve the right to decline any application if we feel the dogs health, safety or well-being would be at risk.
How We Determine What Breed a Dog is - Quite simply, we really don't. Our dogs, most commonly, are magnificent mutts. The breed listed is usually a "mix" and is completely based on a guess of one person (usually shelter staff). There can be endless varying opinions as to what a dog is really mixed with. For example, a dog may be marked as a lab mix and if you get a DNA test done, there may not be any lab in the dog at all. The reality is, if it's important to you to have a certain breed (or it is important that your dog NOT have certain breeds in its makeup), try a breed-specific rescue group. If breed is not a concern when choosing a fit for your family, try to focus on traits that make a difference in daily life such as personality/temperament, size, health, activity level and age. When it comes to choosing a rescue dog, they most often are very watered down mutts and should not be judged based on any specific breed stereotypes. Please remember before you commit that WE CAN NOT/DO NOT REPRESENT THAT WE REALLY KNOW WHAT BREED/MIX A DOG MAY BE.
Adoption Agreement - After your application has been approved and you have chosen your new family member, you will be required sign an adoption agreement before we can finalize your adoption. Adoption agreements are usually done through DocuSign a day prior to the adoption. On adoption day, the counselor will review specifics of the contract and answer any questions that you may have.
Adoption Fees - Adoption Fee can be paid via cash or check at the time of adoption. It can also be paid online through the donation button on the website. Please consider paying the processing fee if using the online option. The adoption fee of $375 (non-refundable) includes appropriate vaccines, spaying/neutering, flea/tick, and heart worm prevention, and a microchip that will be registered to The Maggie Society and the new adopting owner. Adoption fees help to provide "start up" care for rescued animals, but seldom cover the full cost of an animal with greater medical needs. In spite of that, all dogs are adopted for the same cost with hopes that donations and fundraising will cover the bigger expenses.
Adoption Day - When you come to pick up your dog, all adoption paperwork will be signed. You will be required to bring payment at that time. Please also note that you must come with
Adoption Thread- We use Facebook Messenger to create a thread of communication between the Maggie Society, the adopter, the foster, and the adoption counselor. This allows adopters to ask questions and get support while you and your new pup adapt to life together. As an added bonus, we love getting pupdates and photos of our Maggie Alumni and hope that you will stay in touch! For those not on Messenger, we use text groups for the same purpose.
Please contact us if you have any questions.
