The Maggie Society is a non profit dog rescue in Wilson, North Carolina. Recognized as a 501c3 nonprofit in August of 2016, our team has worked tirelessly to help great dogs find great homes.
Every dog that enters The Maggie Society goes into a foster home where an individual, couple, or family that has volunteered time and energy into molding a rescued animal into a loving pet. Our foster families provide a safe place to land and a temporary home where dogs and puppies learn basic house manners. Our dedicated volunteers work to find well-matched, carefully screened homes, while other volunteers help with transports that send our dogs to their forever homes with our northern partner rescue groups.
We also serve as a resource for our community and pet owners by providing education and information on responsible pet ownership, including the importance of spay/neuter and other essential vetting, positive behavior training, good nutrition and how dog owners can provide a quality life and maintain good mental and emotional health as well as physical health.
With our committed volunteers, foster homes, local veterinarians, and northern partner rescues, we are able to save the lives hundreds of dogs every year.

Community ImpactThe Maggie Society Canine Rescue, Rehabilitation, and Education works hard....our volunteers work hard...to rescue dogs, to save as many as we can from euthanasia. In 2022, we rescued 458 dogs and puppies and while that number seems impressive for a small, foster-based rescue, the truth is...it was barely a drop in the bucket.
In 2022, 66 shelters reported (Best Friends says there are 120 shelters so that's almost half not reporting). From the ones who reported in 2022, a startling 14,705 dogs euthanized. Imagine the number if all NC shelters reported. Our day in/day out efforts to save these animals was just over 3% of what was euthanized. We love our rescue stories, the happy endings, the success of our community efforts. Every now and then, however, we have to reel ourselves into the truth and be reminded that even though we aren't saving them all, to the ones we are rescuing, we've made all the difference. We couldn't do this without fosters, volunteers, and the heartfelt donations that keep us going. Rescue is hard, but what is harder is seeing what wasn't rescued. Interested in Adopting? We are always looking for great homes for great dogs. Perhaps your new best friend is waiting on you to submit your application. Adopting a dog from a rescue saves two...the one who goes home with you and the next dog in need who can now enter a foster home because of the space your adoption opened up.
Don't wait for an event to meet your new best friend! Approved adopters may meet a dog or puppy in a private meeting!
